Autoimmune Disease
The incidence of autoimmune disease is increasing, with the prevalence among the younger generations notably on the rise. Autoimmune disease can be described as a condition whereby the body identifies parts of the body itself as pathogenic and initiates an immune response to target and attack those cells or organ/s of the body. Autoimmune disease can be organ-specific which involves a particular organ of the body such as the thyroid, or non-specific which involves generalised systems of the body as seen, for example, in lupus. Some examples of auto immune diseases include:
The onset of autoimmune disease can be triggered through genetic susceptibility, hormone imbalance, environmental factors and some medications. Autoimmunity may also be triggered by stress - in particular emotional stress - and there are many factors that aggravate the disorder and cause a flare up of symptoms. Dietary factors, lifestyle habits and stress are all known to largely influence the severity and frequency of flare ups. The management of autoimmune conditions should involve a holistic approach at healthcare in which preventative healthcare plays an important role. Individuals that have an autoimmune disease are at an increased risk of developing further autoimmune conditions. Therefore, preventative healthcare is essential and should be considered as a lifelong health goal with the adoption of healthy eating and lifestyle habits. Modulating the immune response, reducing inflammation, reducing cellular oxidation, optimising digestion to facilitate absorption and transportation of nutrients around the body and enhancing the function of the liver are essential objectives in the management of autoimmune disorder. Naturopathy is an effective support to individuals facing an autoimmune disease. Whether a person is taking medication or not, Naturopathy can offer another dimension to the management of autoimmunity to optimise health outcomes.
